What I Must Do
Hermione let out a gasp of shock and Harry held her closer. He spun his broom around and headed straight for Dumbledore.
“Sir…trolls…attack,” Harry rasped out. Fortunately Dumbledore got the message and cast a shield charm around the castle. He then raised his wand to his throat and said “Sonorus”. He moved to the front of the teacher's box to address the students.
“Students, there is an attack about to happen on the castle. You will go to your common rooms with your heads of house and wait there until you are told to leave.” Predictably, the students went into an uproar. “You will go now in a calm and orderly manner. Your house prefects will help you!” This calmed the students somewhat and they started to head out. Dumbledore motioned Harry and the Gryffindor Knights over to him. Harry brought Hermione as she was sitting on his broom.
“Harry, you and your friends will go straight to my office and plan with the Order,” Dumbledore told him. A sudden realization came over Harry. He was going to face off against Voldemort; the prophecy was going to be fulfilled today. “Don't worry Harry, you will not have to face Tom today,” Dumbledore reassured him. Harry nodded and set off to the headmaster's office. Once there, Harry noticed there was a large group of the Order waiting there. Sirius looked up and smiled at them as they sat waiting for Dumbledore. The wait seemed to drag on for hours, but in reality, it was only a few minutes. Soon, Dumbledore came and sat behind his desk. He smiled gravely at the occupants of his office before speaking up.
“Harry, do you have the Marauders Map?” he asked, looking towards Harry and his friends. He nodded and pulled out the map from his pocket. Laying it on the table, Harry activated it and the castle soon revealed itself to them.
“Good, this will help us immensely. Remus, can you transform at will?” Dumbledore asked the Defense Professor. He nodded wearily towards the headmaster and sighed.
“I had hoped I would never have to, but…” Lupin never finished his thought as he looked out the window towards where the trolls were bashing against the barrier.
“Remus, I ask that you, Hagrid and Sirius hold the perimeter.” At this all three nodded and went to leave.
“Tonks, you and Kingsley will hold the Hufflepuff common room from the outside, `Mad-Eye' you and `Dung' will hold the Ravenclaw common room. Doge, Diggle you have the Slytherin common room. And Vance, Podmore you two have the Gryffindor room.” The eight Order members nodded and left quickly, heading to their posts.
“Harry, you and your friends will battle the Death Eaters and Vampires. I will fight Tom,” Dumbledore told him. Harry gulped at this, but set his jaw and nodded towards the elderly headmaster. Dumbledore sighed and looked raged at the prospect of this battle.
“I had hoped you four to be better prepared for this battle. Unfortunately this is not the case. Miss Granger, I must ask you to return to your common room. Harry here will accompany you,” Dumbledore said. Hermione, tears in her eyes, nodded and clutched Harry's arm.

Ron watched his best friends go back towards the common room. He suddenly felt a sinking feeling in his stomach; he instantly knew what it was. `Turles'. Ron set his jaw and stalked down to the Great Hall. He knew Turles would come after him and he had to protect the school. Once in the Great Hall, he shut the doors. Muttering a locking charm, Ron stood in the Hall and waited. Soon, Turles apparated in with a Vampire in toe.
“Ah Ronald, pleased to see you again,” Turles said, his voice sickly sweet. Ron set his jaw and his cool blue eyes were alight with fury.
“Enough!” Ron said with barely controlled rage. Turles smiled and started to power up. Ron seized the opportunity and charged towards Turles. He threw a punch which caught him off guard. Ron quickly charged his energy into his hands and fired a beam towards the Vampire. The energy beam caught it head on and blasted straight through it's chest. A terrifying shriek followed before it finally died.
“Well, there goes your escape plan!” Ron said proudly.
“Very good, Weasley. Now how about we get this show on the road?” Turles said venomously. Ron nodded and powered up. He felt his hair stand on end as his transformation continued. His power suddenly exploded and the familiar golden flames encircled him as his hair changed from red to gold. His sky blue eyes were white for the briefest moment as his power level adjusted to his body. Now they were a mystic green. Ron took in the warrior opposite him. His hair was the same gold, and his eyes were the same green. But Ron could see now why they were different; Turles was greedy and power-hungry and used his power for evil. Ron used his power to help his friends and family.
Turles was the first to attack. While getting a few good punches in on Ron, he wasn't able to hurt him. After several more attempts, Turles backed off.
“Why can't I hurt you?” Turles asked, glaring at Ron. Ron just smirked.
“Shall I show you my real power?”” Ron asked. This infuriated Turles even more and he powered up further, hoping his brute strength would overcome Ron. Ron just nimbly dodged Turles' attacks. When it was clear to Ron that Turles was getting angry and his fighting technique was getting sloppy, Ron sent a stiff kick to his head. Turles went sailing into the wall and hit it with a thump. After he picked himself up, Ron charged at him. Turles never had a chance to dodge the punch Ron sent at him, and was knocked up into the head table. Turles loosening control, extended his palm forward and gathered his energy. Ron smirked at this and cupped his hands on his right side.
“KA….MEH…” Ron chanted as his energy gathered between his hands. Ron saw that Turles' attack was almost complete so he charged his attack faster and harder, feeling the strain it put on his body as he channeled the energy out.
“KA…..MEH…HA…MEH HAAAAA!” Ron shouted as he thrust his hands in front of him and sent his energy towards Turles in a beam, Turles had also sent his attack towards Ron and their beams hit. A more volatile Priori Incantatem was created in the center of the Great Hall where their beams had collided. Turles smirked.
“Is that all you got Weasley? I was hoping for much more!” Turles mocked him as they battled for control. This time it was Ron's turn to smirk.
“No this is! HAAAAA!” Ron replied as he let go of his raw power and pushed it into the beam. Turles was quickly overwhelmed and Ron's beam tore a hole in the wall of the Great Hall. Ron relinquished his hold on the beam and it faded into nothingness. Ron felt Turles' life energy fade away and he smiled sadly. Exhaustion gripped his body and he transformed back into his normal state. Soon Dumbledore led the way into the Great Hall and announced the battle was over.

Draco stood there in the hallway after Harry left with Hermione and Ron had stalked off somewhere. He looked over at Neville before walking off. Draco didn't know where he was headed, but he knew that when his father came after him, he needed to be far away from any students so they would be safe. He walked the halls of Hogwarts until he came across a small courtyard on the west wing of the castle. Draco walked outside and saw a small fountain in the center. Looking closer, Draco saw that it was a giant serpent and a raging lion doing battle.
“Perfect, don't you agree?” A cold sneering voice that Draco recognized immediately asked from behind Draco.
“Yes I agree, Father!” Draco replied coolly, he turned to face his father and was shocked. Lucius Malfoy was flanked by two Dementors and four other Vampires. A sneer grew on Lucius' face at Draco's reaction to his bodyguards. Draco's face went from shocked to strangely confident.
“Scared, Father?” Draco asked him, his eyebrow cocked in mock questioning. Lucius let out a feral snarl and charged at his son. Draco leapt into the air and flipped away from his father. Not to be made a fool of, Lucius drew his sword and slashed towards Draco. Draco barely dodged his father's attacks and soon was being backed into a wall. Lucius started laughing at his son's predicament and let his guard falter for a moment. Draco seized the opportunity and punched his father away. Once he had enough room, Draco leapt onto the surrounding overhang.
“Accio Swords” Draco cried. After a few moments, his swords flew towards him. He reached up and plucked them out of the air. Smiling to himself, Draco quickly drew his swords and pounced on the prone form of his father. Lucius managed to block the attack, but only barely.
The two traded blows several more times before they both jumped away from each other. Lucius sneered at his son.
“You're stronger than I thought, but you are still weak!”
“I may not be evil, but I AM NOT WEAK!” Draco cried out as he charged towards his father again. The two traded blows, but this time they both attacked with a vengeance. Draco slashed at his father, but so far, only caught his billowing robes. Draco for his part had also managed to avoid his father's attacks. They were both tiring, but had yet to slow down their attacks. Both were covered in a thin sheen of sweat, and were gasping for air, but didn't allow themselves to slow down.
“Your mother made you weak!” Lucius told him. Draco lost control and charged him. Lucius was expecting this and readied his sword. When Draco had charged close enough Lucius' sword stabbed through his left side. Although the pain was reaching unbearable levels, Draco managed to press a sword to his father's neck.
“You killed my mother. Give me a reason to let you live?” Draco spat at his father between labored breaths. Their eyes locked and Lucius felt fear for the first time in his life.
“I'm your Father…” Lucius started.
“And you made me this way!” Draco told him as he pressed his blade threw his neck.
Draco stumbled out of the courtyard with a sword still threw his belly. He made his way into the hall before running into Dumbledore and Ginny.
“Draco, what happened?” Ginny asked in shock, her eyes glued to the sword protruding from his midsection. Draco replied by collapsing in Ginny's outstretched arms.
“I think Miss Weasley; you should take him to Hospital Wing. I will inform the others that the battle is over,” Dumbledore told her, she nodded in reply and helped Draco to the Hospital Wing.

Neville stood there, outside the headmaster's office after all his friends had walked off. He watched Draco until he disappeared down the hall. Neville sighed and went the opposite way of them all. He had seen Bellatrix Lestrange on the Marauders Map, but she was outside the castle walls, so he couldn't avenge his parents. Sighing angrily, he stormed around the castle until he found himself standing outside the Slytherin common room. Scowling to himself, Neville turned around and started to storm off when he heard a voice from behind him.
“What brings you here, Longbottom?” Neville turned around and saw a tall, lanky Slytherin 6th year. His black hair was falling around his face and his dark brown eyes were dancing with power.
“I…I was looking for a Death Eater!” Neville replied, surprised that he had said that to a potential Death Eater himself.
“Don't worry, Longbottom. I'm not in with Riddles lot,” The Slytherin told him, the visibly relaxed Neville, but his curiosity got the better of him.
“Who are you?”
“Blaise Zabani,” he replied and Neville finally recognized him.
“You taught Cho the Imperius Curse!” Neville said in shock. Blaise laughed a little at this and motioned Neville to follow him.
“To answer your next question, no I don't follow evil. Lord Grindelwald just wants complete separation of the muggle and magical worlds. Muggleborns will be taken at birth and placed in a magical orphanage.” Blaise explained to him.
“What about the Dark Arts?” Neville questioned.
“Just a better education on them,” Blaise told him simply.
“That's not evil, why did Dumbledore appose him so much?” Neville asked, his curiosity peaked. Blaise laughed again and looked intently at Neville.
“Dumbledore made a mistake, but now Lord Grindelwald has returned to continue his great plan,” Blaise told him. Neville nodded thoughtfully and went on his way. He wandered around the castle until he found himself back outside Dumbledore's office. Neville felt strange. Sure, the way Voldemort used the unforgivable curses was evil, but what if they were used on criminals? That wouldn't be considered evil, would it?
Dumbledore soon came down from his office and broke Neville out of his musings.
“Ah Mr. Longbottom, it appears that Harry has made Tom retreat. We should go and relieve the Order members, don't you agree?” Dumbledore told him. Neville nodded and the two left to gather up the others and debrief.

Harry walked away from Dumbledore's office holding Hermione tightly. He knew she was scared of this battle, not for herself but for him. Although Harry was touched by this, he wanted to relieve her of her worries.
“Hermione, I know you're scared, but I'll make it through this battle if you believe I will,” Harry told her as he squeezed her shoulders tighter. Suddenly, Hermione threw her arms around Harry and squeezed him tightly.
“I believe you will come back to me,” Hermione whispered to Harry through her sobs. Harry wound his arms around her, rubbing her back until she calmed down.
“Come on, let's get you to the common room,” Harry said in a falsely cheery tone. Hermione gave him a piercing stare, but Harry shrugged it off. They walked in silence for a while before Hermione pulled him into a classroom and kissed him forcefully. Once she pulled back, Harry had a chance to breath.
“What's wrong Harry?” Hermione questioned. Sighing to himself about how persistent Hermione could be, Harry told her.
“He's coming!” It was all he had to say, but those two simple words frightened Hermione more than anything. Harry saw her reaction and grabbed her hand. As they were about to leave, pain laced through Harry's body from his scar. They both turned to the doorway and let out a surprised gasp as a ball of dark flames ignited in the air.
A slow and haunting cry came from the flame and Harry realized it sounded similar to Fawkes' Phoenix song, only much darker. A cold and merciless laugh then confirmed their worst fears. Voldemort had arrived.
Standing there with a phoenix of deep magenta red perched on his shoulder was Voldemort. Flanked by two Death Eaters, on his right stood a one with long greasy hair. To his left was a smaller Death Eater with a silver hand, Wormtail.
“Hello Potter, what a surprise to see you here,” Voldemort said to him, a spiteful smirk growing on his face. Harry felt his anger rise as he stood opposite the murderer of his parents.
“It ends tonight, Tom!” Harry said. Although his voice wavered, his steely determination made it threatening. Wormtail cowered beside Voldemort, who was angered by Harry's threat.
“Potter, I will destroy you! First, I will take your voice, then your sight. Before I take your hearing I will kill your Mudblood so you can hear her screams. Then when I finally grant you death, you will be standing in the underworld blind deaf and dumb and all who see you will know here stands Harry Potter, the-boy-who-DIED!” Voldemort cried as he attacked. A strange curse was shot at them. He shoved Hermione out of the way and shot an Expelliarmus at Voldemort, which was promptly blocked.
“Come now Potter, I thought it ended tonight?” Voldemort shot at him, before Harry could retort however, the Death Eater on Voldemort's right, shot a flash of blue light at Voldemort. It caught him off guard. After sending Voldemort flying, he turned on Wormtail and sent a stunner towards him. He pulled off his hood to reveal Snape.
“Quick Potter, run!” Snape cried out to him as Voldemort was re-entering the room. Harry grabbed Hermione's hand, but it was too late, Voldemort flicked them backward and then rounded on Snape.
“I'm disappointed in you Severus, now you will know what real pain feels like!” Voldemort spat, his red eyes narrowed dangerously. Just as Harry had picked himself up, Voldemort used the Cruciatus Curse on Snape.
“NOO!!” Harry cried. Voldemort laughed at Snape's pain before removing the curse. He then turned to Harry and leveled his wand at Hermione.
“So tell me Potter, how should the Mudblood die?” Voldemort asked him, enjoying mocking Harry. Harry however let out an inhuman growl and pounced, only to be flung away again by Voldemort. Hermione crawled over to Harry's side and gripped him tightly.
“I'm sorry Harry,” she sobbed. Harry squeezed her hand and stood up. Voldemort laughed again and cast the Cruciatus Curse on Harry. His skin was suddenly on fire as the curse ripped threw him. Hermione heard Harry's cries and shot a waterproof flame at Voldemort. The flame struck home because Voldemort was enjoying torturing Harry. Once the Curse was lifted, Harry sent a stunner towards Voldemort who dodged and sent both Harry and Hermione flying again.
Once they climbed to their feet, they found Voldemort waiting for them, wand leveled.
“Crucio,” Voldemort said cruelly, his wand pointed at Hermione. As she cried out in pain something inside Harry snapped. All his weariness vanished; instead he was filled with anger and hatred towards Voldemort.
“Corperalus Sceptrius,” Harry said in a vengeful whisper. A bright white light shone from his wand, illuminating everything in the room. Voldemort released Hermione and cast a shield charm, its silvery sheen reflecting Harry's soul sword. Harry set his jaw and stared towards Voldemort.
“Potter, you know that it's pointless trying to attack me,” Voldemort mocked him, the sneer clear on his face. Harry just charged in and swung his soul sword. The clang from the impact of the sword and shield reverberated around the room. Voldemort's sneer grew as Harry pressed harder against the shield. Harry felt the shield splitting under the pressure and he gave Voldemort a smirk.
“Not so worthless now is it?” Harry asked as his sword finally broke through the shield and slashed across Voldemort's chest.
“You insolent brat!” Voldemort cried before his phoenix landed on his shoulder and disapparated.
Harry gave himself a small smile as exhaustion finally set in and he collapsed onto his back. Chuckling to himself, Hermione finally came over.
“What's so funny, Harry?” she asked, a smile clear on her tear stained face.
“I won,” Harry rasped out, his throat felt raw and his arms felt like lead. Still, he had made Voldemort flee after he had wounded him. Hermione suddenly collapsed on Harry's side and snuggled up to him.
“You were so brave Harry, I love you,” Hermione whispered. Harry smiled to himself and kissed her head. Soon Dumbledore and Neville arrived, helping them to their feet.
“How about we get you two to the Hospital Wing for some rest?” Dumbledore asked. Both Harry and Hermione nodded listlessly and as soon as their heads hit the pillow, they were fast asleep.

The next few weeks past like a blur to Harry. Once they were released from the hospital wing, they sat their end of year exams, which they all managed to pass without trouble, although Harry's Potions score could have been better. Soon, they were all sitting on the Hogwarts' Express, heading back home. Harry held Hermione in his arms, while Neville had his nose buried in a history book, Draco was lying opposite them with his head on Ginny's lap. She ran her fingers through his hair as she read a Witch Weekly magazine. Ron was sitting cross-legged on the floor, playing chess with Luna. Too soon for the seven occupants, the Hogwarts Express pulled into platform 9 3 / 4. They all helped each other with their luggage and shortly were meeting up with family members. It was an amazing feeling for Harry when Sirius, Rita and Mel arrived to pick him up.
After a long and passionate goodbye to Hermione and friendly farewells to the rest of his friends, Harry was ready for what was shaping up to be the best summer of his life.
