Well, I'm going to join the voices of several other reviewers about how quickly Harry and Hermione get over Ron. It is just way too sudden. I'm going to be a bit more vicious than most though, and say that this reflects very poorly on them both. I mean sheesh, some friends! They both betrayed Ron in a very fundamental way, and then just say "He's gone." Toward sthe end, it sounded more like "Oh well. He's gone. What's for dinner?" It's almost like they said what they thought they were expected to say, and not really what they felt.
Hermione started off well, pointing out that he is their friend and whatnot, but Harry ruined that potential chance at showing humanity by interrupting with his "I love you." and they never went back. Honestly I hope Ron never comes back to them. He doesn't need friends that a) betray him so, and b) don't really seem to care that they hurt him.
I can see H/Hr as time goes by, wistfully sighing over some bittersweet memory of poor Ron. On holidays they will wonder aloud what Ron is doing. When watching a game, they would imagine what Ron would say to a particular move or score. And then they will go screw like bunnies.
Shrug, I just don't feel like they truly regret hurting Ron. I'm not saying I would like to see angst and melencholy dripping from every word spoken and every move taken, but they should be feeling guilt up the wazoo and I just don't see much of that. This is a sorrow they should feel the rest of their lives.
Perhaps another chapter? Forty years down the line? We see the characters in old age. Harry and Hermione grew old together, happily married, maybe with kids, but with the memory of Ron always with them (especially if their own kids have good friends at Hogwarts). Pictures of him on their mantle, scrapbooks with pictures of their times at Hogwarts, etc. Fond but painful memories. And then they bump into him for the first time in all those years. They find out that he lived a full life as well, perhaps with Luna, and has been happy too. He has no real interest in renewing their friendship, but knowing that he lived his life happy would be a small weight off of H/Hr's minds. A chapter such as this would show that they really do regret hurting him, and would show that while some things can be forgiven, they cannot really be forgotten.
Just my two cents. Sorry if it came off as a bit strong. I personally think infidelity is one of the wost things a person can do, and I'm usually a little harsh with stories that use it as a main plot point. ^_^; |
